When you get bogged down in operational details, transformative change is blocked.
Most people pursue change in their business and lives by making small changes to proven routines. And there's no doubt - small changes can compound into huge improvement.
But how do you know you're making change in the right direction?
At Tribal Disrupt, we believe that transformative change must start with your vision of a better future. That can mean better for owners, management, staff, clients, or even the planet. Think big. Think broadly. Think creatively - and be honest about what really matters to you.
Vision planning goes together with corporate purpose - why is it that we do what we do, and how can we improve it??
With a clear understanding of your future vision in place and in writing, you can then move on to strategic planning. In this phase, you ask, "Now that we know where we want to go, what are the best ways to get there?" This must take into account your prior experiences, client needs, resources, location, preferred modes of working, capital access, and other practical realities of running your business.
In parallel with the strategy, we also must ask, "What are the key capabilities which will enable you to carry out your vision?" How will the job get done, in order to carry our your future vision? What personnel, structure, culture & systems will drive your company's future excellence?
And finally, we must ask, "What are the risks of making major change in the direction of your vision?" Every choice is a balance between competing benefits. You trade flexibility for predictability, one-on-one client attention for the ability to scale. You can't eliminate risk, but you can explicitly identify and address the trade-offs which are involved in the path you are drawing.
This is a broad sketch of the process of transformational change at the organizational level, or at home. Just as every business is different, so too is every major change. But give yourself permission to start by thinking big, not small - define your vision, then work from there.
